Olympic Torch Relay Starts China Leg in Sanya

posted on May 4th, 2008

Crowds gathered in Sanya City alongside the bay today, turning Sanya Wan into a colorful guarded path flanked by lively supporters and onlookers. There were flags, banners, and stickers on faces. Old-fashioned airplanes, dragon kites, and miniature blimps circled in the air. The sight was an ample and relieving welcome for the Olympic torch Relay as it entered its host at last after a month of intermittent protests and constant tension. But there would be no protests here today.

Speed skater Yang Yang, China's first Winter Olympics Gold medalist, headed off the relay to encouraging cheers. Shouts of "Jia You!" (Go! Go! Go!) filled the hot air and people ran alongside as the torch was passed from torch bearer to torch bearer making its way from tiny Phoenix Island and down along Sanya Bay. The list of 208 torch bearers for the 30 kilometer Sanya route also included Sanya City Mayor Lu Zhiyuan, actress Zhang Ziyi, and Jackie Chan.

From Sanya the torch will make its way to Wuzhishan, Wanning, and the last stop on Hainan Island Haikou before entering Mainland China on May 7th.
